Nutritional therapy

Cardiovascular health

Cholesterol levels and blood pressure are two crucial markers of cardiovascular health, each playing a significant role in determining your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Through strategic dietary choices and lifestyle modifications, we can make meaningful differences and promote optimal heart health.

Contributing factors

Cholesterol is a fatty substance produced by the liver and also ingested through certain foods. Cholesterol travels through your bloodstream in two main types of lipoproteins: low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

LDL cholesterol, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, carries cholesterol particles throughout your body. When there’s too much LDL cholesterol in your blood, it can build up in the walls of damaged blood vessels, forming plaque. Over time, this can lead to a condition called atherosclerosis, where arteries become narrowed and hardened, restricting blood flow to vital organs like the heart and brain.

Atherosclerosis is a significant risk factor for heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. It can also lead to complications like peripheral artery disease, which affects blood flow to the limbs, and chronic kidney disease.

Unlike conditions with obvious symptoms, high cholesterol and blood pressure often go unnoticed until they cause serious health issues. Over time, however, they can lead to symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, and vision problems. Left untreated, they significantly increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular complications.

How can nutritional therapy help?

^

We’ll work towards optimising your lipid profiles by incorporating foods rich in soluble fibre, plant sterols, and heart-healthy fats. These nutrients work synergistically to balance “good” and “bad” cholesterol levels, reduce triglycerides, and promote overall cardiovascular health.

^

Focusing on antioxidant-rich fruits, vegetables, and nuts, our aim will be to increase protection against oxidative stress and inflammation, vital for cardiovascular health.

Emerging research shows a link between gut health and cardiovascular health so we’ll also work to support a healthy gut microbiome which can benefit cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
